My business is now Facebook official! Come follow along: Micaela B Photography.
I decided to spend my first year of business conducting a marketing experiment. After getting rid of all personal social media, I wondered, “Is it possible to build a photography business without social media?” I decided to put off creating social media pages for my business to find out.
I know this experiment would be good for me for a few reasons:
It forced me to focus on other marketing strategies that will serve my business better in the long run. I would rather build a strong foundation for email communication and invest in real, local relationships than have thousands of followers who don’t even live near me.
I had to make a point of talking to friends and family about what I was doing. I couldn’t just hope people would see social media posts. I knew it was up to me to tell people.
I had more time to actually take photos. For some reason, I decided to start this business while pregnant and about to have four kids under four. I knew I either had time to overthink it or I had time to go out and take photos.
I was able to start my business with healthy boundaries and prioritise time with family. Every time I use social media, it quickly adds up to more time than I meant to spend! Building my business in other ways allowed me to keep my priorities straight.
I should give a disclaimer: I did use local Facebook groups to market my business. Is that cheating? Maybe. But to me, it felt more like posting on a virtual bulletin board than jumping into the hustle of social media.
I’m happy to say, the experiment was successful! I was able to find a good number of clients through other marketing strategies and even run a couple of successful rounds of mini sessions.
The experiment was successful, but I decided to go ahead and create a Facebook page anyway. Instead of viewing social media as a reliable marketing strategy, I want to view it as a virtual business card. I will have a few photos on there like a virtual portfolio, and I will share updates every once in a while.
I have to say, I’m nervous to venture back in. Social media used to have SUCH a strong hold on me and take so many hours from each day. Do you think I can find a sustainable way to run a Facebook page for my business?
