What to Wear for Family Photos in Uxbridge Ontario
You're feeling on top of the world because you finally scheduled that family photo session you've been putting off, and then it hits you. Now you need to choose outfits.
I know choosing outfits for photos can feel like a daunting task (it's the question I get most often!), so I'm here to give you my best tips, and also bring you peace in the process.
As you choose outfits, remember that we are looking to capture real life. This means you don't need to go out and buy all new outfits or create five Pinterest boards or hire a professional to choose them for you. It's important that the outfits you choose feel like you and that you all feel comfortable moving around and interacting in the chosen outfits.
I like to think of it as dressing like ourselves, but at our best. I choose something I'd feel comfortable wearing to church on Sunday on a regular weekend.
Here are a few tips as you put together your outfits:
Wear something that feels like you. I love wearing a dress for family photos, but if you are more of a jeans-and-T-shirt girl, go with that.
Choose your own outfit first. I don't know about you, but it's always harder to dress myself than my kids. They look cute in anything! I recommend picking your own outfit first and coordinating the colours around your outfit.
Avoid overly matching outfits. If you want a couple of people to wear the same thing, we can totally work with that. Trust me, I am also a sucker for putting my kids in matching outfits! But, if too many people are matching or wearing the same colour, it can be difficult to tell where one person ends and another begins. Try to stick with a max of two people wearing the same outfit for best results.
Avoid harsh colours or busy patterns. Clothes with large prints don't always translate well in photos. For best results, choose solid colours or a more subtle pattern like a small floral print or plaid. In the same way, some colours like bright pink or red don't translate well in photos or can throw off the colour of your skin.
Consider how everyone's outfits look together. Like I said, you don't need to be overly matchy-matchy, but I like to lay everyone's clothes next to each other and see how they will look together. If some of the outfits seem to clash, or one outfit has colour tones completely different from the others, you may want to make a change.
Don't overthink it. Again, you want outfits that feel like you! You don't necessarily need to go out and buy something new. When I'm dressing my own family, I like to think of it as dressing like ourselves, but at our best. For my family, that means I'm wearing an outfit I'd wear to church instead of what I'd wear to clean the house.
If you've been putting off your family photos because outfits feel intimidating, let's change that! Let's get your session on the calendar, and then you can choose outfits that feel like you.
